E2BN E-Safety guidance: Many E2BN projects make provision for users (usually children) to upload materials to our websites and to comment upon the work of other users. Because we provide a means of online communication between children, it is essential that E2BN makes every effort to ensure that child contributors are not put at risk of harm or unwanted contact via our websites nor do they use our websites to communicate inappropriate personal information, to bully or threaten others or publish content that would cause offence to others. Preventing inappropriate material on our sites: Wherever an E2BN site allows users to submit comments or content there is a 'reminder' that the site is for educational purposes and that language and content must be appropriate. Because children and young people occasionally ignore this reminder or have different standards of appropriateness no child or young person can publish anything on any E2BN sites without the materials first being 'approved' by an adult user with moderator privileges. Who has Moderator privileges? Only registered users with moderator privileges can approve items for publication. In addition to E2BN core staff (who are super-moderators) teachers, LA and RBC staff can request moderator privileges for their own school, LA or RBC. All will have been CRB checked by their own organisation. Who can be a Moderator? Teachers, classroom assistants, LA educational personnel and RBC staff can register as moderators but can only moderate their own school, LA or organisation. These professionals work in areas where CRB checking is a standard practise and the E2BN phone call to the employing organisation is about checking that the registrant is indeed employed in one of these roles. There may be other professionals (such as youth workers, educational health workers, museums education officers) who wish to use E2BN projects as part of their work with young people and would want to moderate the content uploaded. In these cases the same procedure would be followed as for educational personnel. Who can't be a Moderator? Individuals who are not employed by a CRB checking organisation cannot be moderators. This includes but isn't limited to parents who are educating their children at home, independent tutors and members of the general public. We have had applications from teachers working aboard and where we can ascertain that the teacher has undergone the appropriate checking procedures we will provide moderator privileges. However, where there is doubt or we are unable to carry out our own verification process accounts will be refused. How does E2BN ensure that Moderators are who they claim? Everyone seeking registration as an E2BN moderator must complete an online registration form and give the contact details of their employer organisation. A member of E2BN telephones the employer organisation to confirm the employment status of the individual registrant. We do not accept mobile or personal phone numbers for this purpose. If you have a school email address we'd prefer you to that rather than your private email address. If your registration is accepted we will send you your account details. We will also email your school/organisation with our e-safety guidance and details of what to do if you should change schools/ organisations. For this reason you must also provide us with the school or the headteacher's official email address. On a regular basis all email addresses given as part of the registration process are automatically tested. On a regular basis registered users and their employer organisations are contacted by email and asked to confirm that the registered user is still employed by the organisation, that they wish to remain a moderator for the organisation, that they still agree to the terms and conditions of use and that the contact details are correct. As a Moderator what can I do? Moderators can read, publish and sometimes edit content submitted by children and young people in their organisation. For example, a teacher can only moderate the accounts of pupils at their school. Moderators can add and delete users to and from their organisations admin area. What are my responsibilities as a Moderator? As a moderator you are expected to View all submissions made by users within your school or organisation Ensure that no submission contains inappropriate language, images or themes (Swearing, racist or sexist comments, incitement to illegal or inappropriate behaviour, images or comments that identify themselves or other young people, images or comments that are of a sexual or extremely violent nature, animal cruelty, or likely to cause religious offence are all considered to be inappropriate. This is not an exhaustive list.) Publish, edit and publish or refuse submissions from within your school or organisation in a timely manner Inform E2BN if you are no longer employed by your school or organisation – we will then stop your account and contact your school or organisation for an alternative moderator. If you are changing school/organisation we will set you up as a moderator for your new school/organisation. To keep your log-in details private What happens if I publish something inappropriate by mistake? Mistakes can and do happen – let us know and will remove the item. If someone else finds your mistake first we will remove the item and inform you. However, it is your responsibility as a moderator to check everything from your class/school/organisation. If it appears that you are not checking your users' content we will contact you and your employer organisation. If we think that any content you have sanctioned could be illegal we will refer the matter to the appropriate authorities. Reporting inappropriate content Anyone who finds content on our site of an inappropriate nature should use the 'contact us' link to let us know. Please copy the URL (web address) of the page containing the inappropriate content into the online contact us form so that we can identify the problem quickly and outline your concerns. If we agree that the content maybe inappropriate we will remove or modify it. If we don't agree that the content is inappropriate we will tell you why we are leaving it on the site. Who decides what's inappropriate? Some things are fairly obviously 'inappropriate' but often it's a matter of perceptive. For this reason if an image or comment might be inappropriate we ask members of the BLT (Broadband Learning and Teaching) and particularly our Teacher's Panel to decide.
